E o site saiu do ar.

O estalo

Why are we there? Where could we be? How can we get there? Are we getting there?

O resultado

The itch

I started my career as a planning trainee at NBS, the agency founded by Jurandir Craveiro. Years later, he wrote on his blog that he had dug up Thompson Total Branding, JWT’s planning methodology that was never rolled out and only existed on a CD-ROM. He spent over a year turning it into a website, and my name was on the list of the team he thanked.

It was rare material that a lot of planners relied on. And the site went offline.

The insight

I wasn’t involved in the original site, but I thought it would be worth getting involved. Organizing this content in a modern way would be a way to study the methodology and, at the same time, work out how to present it. Studying the content and deciding how to show it became the same job.

What I did

The original site was gone, but a backup survived on the Internet Archive. From there, I converted the pages to Markdown one by one. Since then, this manual has been my starting point whenever I want to try a new technology:

It’s over 50 pages, organized around the manual’s Planning Cycle and its original questions: Where are we now? Why are we there? Where could we be? How can we get there? Are we getting there?

The result

The manual is back online, easy to navigate from start to finish. Every version was a fair test: the content never changed, only the tool did. And with each one, I went back over the material.

What I learned

Some material doesn’t age.

A manual written decades ago still works as a bridge to learning what’s new.
